A Quick word about Tales from the Whispering Wood Book 1
An Update on My Adaptation of "The Adventures of Reddy Fox"
I am writing to share some exciting news about my recent project, which involves adapting Thornton W. Burgess’s classic children’s book, "The Adventures of Reddy Fox", for today’s young readers.
As you may know, the original story, published in 1913, reflects the sensibilities of its time. One of the key plot points involves Farmer Brown’s Boy using a gun to shoot young Reddy Fox. While this was a common narrative device in early 20th-century literature, I felt it was important to update this element to better align with contemporary values and the sensitivities of modern children.
In my adaptation, I have re-imagined this scene to remove the use of a firearm. Instead, Farmer Brown’s Boy no longer owns a gun and instead throws rotting fruit—such as big, stinky plums—at poor young Reddy Fox. This change maintains the humor and mischief of the original while eliminating the violent undertones, making the story more suitable and engaging for today’s audience.
It’s worth noting that the original book was written in a very different era—a time without television, or widely accessible films. All that they had were radio plays if you were rich enough to own a radio. The silent film era was still in its infancy, and it would be another two decades before sound and color became standard in entertainment. By updating the storytelling, I aim to preserve the charm and lessons of Burgess’s work while ensuring it resonates with children growing up in a modern, media-rich world.
I believe this adaptation not only honors the spirit of the original but also introduces a new generation to the timeless adventures of Reddy Fox in a way that is both thoughtful and entertaining.
Thank you for your time and interest in my project. I would be delighted to hear your thoughts or discuss this further if you have any questions.
Warm regards,
John Woodward
